When I was a teenager I used to set my parents VCR to record Alternative Nation on MTV every week (I guess it was wednesday night), always watching the show the next day, straight after coming back from school.
One of the biggest impacts on me of all the videos I got on tape probably had Nine Inch Nails’ Wish from their 1992 EP Broken.
Though at a point I lost intersted in Trent Reznors work, which became more and more irrelevant at a time, he really got my attention again, releasing the Ghost I-IV collection under Creative Commons, which – if one had stripped it down to one 10 track CD, would have been a brilliant release.
After announcing that he won’t be performing as / with Nine Inch Nails anymore – or at least for a while, he is now coming back with his new project, called How To Destroy Angels, which seems to be at least a small but important act of liberation in his late musical career.
The most remarkable point, listening the first time, is that he is not singing anymore, (exept for some backing vocals) passing the mic to his wife Mariqueen Maandig, which was obviously a brilliant move, for Reznor was always an outstanding, maybe sometimes overambitious songwriter but sucked completely as a singer.
The newly released EP, featuring artwork of Mark Weaver, starts now, where the promising songs on Ghost I-IV ended, creating some very calm, sometimes rather dark, soundcapes, accompanied with Maandigs quiet, almost whispered vocals.
Best thing for you stingy guys out there is, that the self-titled EP can be downloaded on the How To Destroy Angels homepage for free, so why don’t we give it a try…
Fur Lined, BBB and the outstanding A Drowning a really worth a listen! Also check out the Craig Williams remix on A Drowning.
