Doing a concept album is not necessarily the zeitgeist of this decade. Doing a concept album about the former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, and widow of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, something that doesn’t happen more than twice in a century… probably.
David Byrne and Fatboy Slim teamed up to do exactly this: They invited over a dozen – mainly female – singers, including Martha Wainwright and Roisin Murphy and did a 22 song double CD, called Here Lies Love, which is now something between a pop album and a soundtrack to a broadway musical.
Some might say now, “C’mon, we had Evita already, the last thing we need is the same being transformed to Southeast Asia.” which is not totally wrong, but between the 22 songs, there are some killers in between the fillers.
Please Don’t, which is definitely in the killer section, and also the first single – sung by Santigold, the former Santogold – can be downloaded for free on David Byrne’s official homepage.
